Situated in a peaceful hilltop setting amid olive groves, in the unspoilt Cretan village of Koutouloufari, lies the delightful Village Holiday Club. (Check out Google Maps: )
Conveniently located almost midway between the island’s medieval capital of Heraklion and the picturesque harbour resort of Agios Nikolaos, this is the perfect touring centre from which to explore the eastern part of Crete, Greece’s largest island at 264 km from east to west.
However tempted you may be to spend most of your holiday on the nearby beach, you’ll find so much to do within easy driving distance. Just 1.5 km away is the village of Hersonissos, with its bustling beach road full of tourist shops and cafes, and just behind it the ‘old town’, a fascinating network of narrow winding alleys, almost untouched by the modern world.
Located 7 km away is the village of Malia, where you can visit the ruins of a 4,000 year old Minoan palace by the seashore and, like all such sites, Malia itself has a beautiful setting, close to the finest stretch of beach on the island. Agios Nikolaos, a pretty resort town known for its excellent sporting facilities, is set around a charming harbour, lined with tavernas and souvenir shops.
The major highlights of Heraklion, Crete’s capital, are the romantic 16th century castle, with its intriguing museum and the magnificent Venetian harbour, from which you can walk right around the Venetian walls which encircle the city. A sight not to be missed is the remains of the main Minoan palace of Knossos, 5 km from the city, which every year attracts thousands of visitors from all around the world.
NB: The resort is situated on a hillside and therefore may be unsuitable for elderly or disabled guests.
